11 Lighting Images.

There is low-key lighting in this image in the background and on the smoke.
There is also top lighting directed on the woman in the image that comes from above to accentuate the features of the character and make her look more glamorous.
The lighting gives a sense of mystery and danger which makes the audience assume that the genre of this image may be action or drama as the lighting gives a sense of this.

There is a lot of low-key lighting used in this image as the whole image seems to be full of shadows and darkness.
There is top-lighting directed on the characters face and her face only which makes her face stand out and look glamorous.
The lighting is effective as there seems to be tension and suspense. Her facial expressions are neutral and emotionless which suit the shadowy image as it looks empty. Her face looks innocent however she is holding a cigarette in her hand which is contradicting.

There is high-key lighting.
There is top lighting.
The top lighting is directed on his crown which highlights his high status and power. There are also some shadows on his facial expressions which contrast and make him look angry.

There is low-key lighting.
There is back lighting and under lighting and some top lighting on his face.
The top lighting accentuates the features of the character which makes him look glamorous and powerful whereas the low key, under and back lighting gives an effect of a dark and mysterious force.

There is high-key lighting.
There is back lighting.
The high key lighting causes an effect of a more realistic scene. lighting is focused to show her facial exressions which seem to be horrified in a sense. the use of back lighting creates a silhouette which makes us believe the genre to be horror or sci-fi.

There is high-key lighting.
Top lighting and back lighting.
the high key lighting creates a realistic and natural effect of a couple kissing eachother, it makes it look real and pure. the top lighting makes them look glamorous, mainly the woman as back lighting is also used to create shadows which cover the mans faces slightly suggesting secrecy in a sense.

Low-key lighting.
Back lighting.
Low-key lighting creates various shadows which give an effect of mystery. the back lighting creates silhouettes which hint a sort of hidden identity as faces are hidden.

High-key and low-key lighting.
Under lighting.
High-key lighting on the face to accentuate features of her facial expressions which clearly show fear and horror. low-key lighting creates mysterious shadows and the underlighting makes is think it is a horror or sci-fi movie as there is a distorted effect.

Misenscene comparison

                                   tfios
                                                               The Fault In Our Stars

                                                                      Street Dance

                                                                             Hangover

Costume: In the first image of the fault in the stars. There is a scene of the two protagonists the boy and the girl. we can see how the girl and boy are together therefore connoting a romantic love movie. They are both wearing casual clothes to match the scene as the scene is a in normal place and there costume makes them look very simple as how normal people do everyday

The second still image is from street dance. in this there are 4 main girls dancing and the audience. This is a dance movie therefore we can see how they are all in action on the dance floor. From there body language i can see how they are into the music and the costume they are wearing suits the scene as they are all wear short mini dresses and skirt and they all look similar

The third still image is from the movie hangover and is a comedy move as we can see these 3 actors are the main protagnosts in the movie. They are all wearing casual clothing to set with the scene

Lighting:

Overall all 3 images have the similar lighitng as they all have high key lighting used as all 3 pictures are bright in order for the audiences to have a clear view and be able to see and analyse the actors in each of the movie scenes.

Actors: The first picture has both the protagonist in it and they are sitting. the second stil image has 4 girls and they are dancing to show that it is a dance movie. The 3rd picture has 3 men in it which are the main actors aswell.

Makeup:

Overall all actors from all 3 images have makeup on in order to make themselves stand out and look more glamorous to the audience as they want to attract the audience

Props:

There is only one prop used which is in the first picture as they is carring a bag which is helping her to breate and this represents that she is illl.

Setting:

The first still image is set in a casual place whereas the second stil image is set on a dance competiton were we are able to see the audience in the back. the 3rd picture is also set in a casual place.

Still Image

This picture is from 22 jumpstreet. I chose this movie as the scenes really make me laugh and i believe that this part of the movie scene shows a lot of media work in it that i can talk about.

Costume: The costumes that the characters of this movie are wearing are very classy and connotes that they are going to a very posh part. I can see how the two front men are wearing the same clothes and as they are standing at the front connotes they are the protagonists of the film. They both are wearing classy clothes that people wear in parties and restaurants. The 4 women in the back are all wearing dresses which are very attractive. Everyone in the image looks ready to go out as the shot used to take this image is a long shot and it is allowing us to be able to see every aspect of what the 8 characters are wearing

Lighting: Lighting is the most important part of the clamps as lighting helps make the current scene look more attractive as from this image i can see how top lighting is shining on the characters as it is making them look more glamorous and this lightnings suits the current scene as the actors need top lighting in order to make them stand out to the audience specially at night time. Furthermore back lighting is also used to make the back buildings glow in order for us to be able to see where the scene is set.

Actors: There are 8 actors shown in this still image and each character plays a different role in the movie. for example the from two actors are shown as two funny people of the movie and seems like they are they main actors specially as they are wearing the same clothes. furthermore the actors at the back make it seem like they have the side roles in the movie however from the way they are looking attracts the audience as each of them are dressed in there own way.

Makeup: Makeup has been used for every actor even the men as this helps give them a touch up in order to make them glamorous and stand out to the audience. The women are already wearing lipstick and eyeliner in order to attract the audiences. The men are also have a bit of touch of make up aswell.

Props: There is only one prop used in this image and that is the cardboard box that the man is holding in his hand and this may connote a 'mystery box' as the audience would want to know what it has connection with the scene and whats inside it and what its going to be used for.

Setting: The setting of this scene is set in a town

Film Poster Analysis.

Taken 2 is a mysterious action movie that is about a man and his daughter. From this movie poster the typography used for the movie title is very eye catching. This is because the whole poster is in grey shades and shadows whereas the movie title is in bold red which is a colour of fear and blood. The title of the movie catches the viewers eye due to the title being place near by the centre. The name that the director has used to represent the movie is 'taken 2' from this it connotes that it may be about someone being kidnapped hence the word 'taken.' The images used in this film poster are nicely presented as the main protagonist is on the front page with a long shot. This long shot is allowing us audiences to be able to analyse how the protagonist is portrayed in the movie. From the looks of it i can see how he looks in a bad mood showing that something is going to happen in the movie. Also the iconography used in his hand which is a gun connotes danger and crime therefore denotes that this movie will be an action movie representing an action code.

The tag line at the top of the movie poster gives away the plot of the movie as it says that the movie is about kidnapping and how his daughter has been kidnapped and know they are after him. The three images also known as a 'montage' at the back represents 3 scenes of the movie as the first image shows the girl who may be the protagonists daughter is running away therefore connoting that she is escaping from the 'villian' who is not yet shown. The second picture is of the father and the main protagonist showing how he is shooting someone and the 3rd picture is a close up of his daughter showing her facial expressions and how she is worried. The lighting used in the poster is low key lighting as the lighting is very dark and is creating dramatic shadows on the images and behind. Top lighting has also been used on the mans face of him alone in order to help the audience to analyse his facial expressions.

Overall i believe that the target audience for this movie are people aged 21+ and this is because this is a action type movie which is mostly chosen by young adults as they prefer crime movies that have suspense within them and fights.

Mise-en-scene.

Mise-en-scene is a french term meaning 'what is in the scene'. It refers to everything you see within the frame

There are 5 elements of mise-en-scene:

  • Settings and props.
  • Costume, hair and make-up
  • Facial expressions and body language.
  • Position of characters/objects in frame.
  • Lighting and colour.

Settings and props:
-settings and locations play an important part in film-making.
-sets can be built from scratch or be an actual location.
-they can manipulate an audience by building certain expectations and then taking a different turn.

Costume, hair and make-up.
-costume, Hair & Make Up act as an instant indicator to us of a character’s personality, status and job.
-it tells us whether the film is set in the present and what society/or culture it will centre around.
-certain costumes can signify certain individuals (i.e. black cloak of a vampire).

Facial expressions and body language.
-facial expressions provide a clear indicator of how someone is feeling.
-if someone is smiling broadly, we assume they are happy but we may get a different feeling if this is accompanied by scary music.
-body language may also indicate how a character feels towards another character or may reflect the state of their relationship.

  •  TASK:What meanings/emotions do the following images convey:

this image conveys an emotion of love and passion. this emotion is visible from the girl's facial expressions.

this image conveys danger and anger as the man's facial expressions show this. his head is tilted down while his eyes look up makes it seem scary.

Positioning of characters/objects within a frame:
-positioning within a frame can draw our attention to an important character/object.
-a film maker can use positioning to indicate relationships between people.
  •    TASK: what does the positioning in the following images reveal about the characters/film:

the positioning of the man and the woman shows that there is some tension between them because they are both sitting on the opposite ends of the couch far away from each other. the womans body language shows she is annoyed because her arms are crossed.

from the positioning of these characters you can tell this is a spy movie where these characters may be partners.

Lighting & Colour
lighting & Colour can be used to achieve a variety of effects:
-to highlight important characters or objects within the frame.
-to make characters look mysterious by shading sections of the face & body.
-to reflect a characters mental state/hidden emotions (i.e. bright=happy, dark=disturbed, strobe effect=confused.)

types of Lighting:
-low key lighting: created by using only the key and produces sharp contrasts of light and dark areas. deep, distinct shadows/silhouettes are formed.
    -example: horror films.

-high key lighting: more filler lights are used. lighting is natural and realistic to our eyes. produces brightly lit sets or a sunny day.
    -example: rom-coms.

Analysis of three images explaining how mise-en-scene works in
them:
the use of lowkey lighting produces shadows which create a myterious atmosphere in this cage/prison setting.

the costumes of the characters show a pirate theme which is supported by all the treasure as it relates to pirates.

the costumes here are pirate costumes. the facial expressions of the pirates look confused.

Advert analysis

i have chosen to analyse the coca-cola advert. the colour scheme of this advert uses bright colours such as white, sea blue and red. the bright colours create a sort of joyful atmosphere. the text says 'open happiness' which refers to the coca-cola bottle being able to make you happy. the coca-cola is the central image placed right in between the two polar bears that seem to be happy just by looking at it. the colour white is associated with light, goodness, innocence and purity. it is also considered the colour of perfection which connotates that coca-cola is a perfect drink. in the right hand corner of the advert there is the coca-cola logo which represents the drink itself. the target audience for this advert would be aimed at everyone as it says 'open happiness' and people all ages want to be happy therefore it is aimed at everyone.

Advert Analysis.

The colour scheme of this advert uses dark and dull colours such as black and grey which creates a serious atmosphere that may relate to a dark past. The denotation of finger prints on the right hand background connotates criminality and rebellion, this relates to 50 cent as he has been a part of gangs before. The use of Low-key lighting on the image of 50 cent is affected by the colour scheme and gives a profound feel. The type of shot is a medium-close up as it clearly focuses on the facial expression which is serious. The size of the image takes up 50% of the print which suggests that the face of the advert is as important as the text. In the image the typography which is the largest text that says 'i am what i am' which also relates to the image of 50 cent as it connotates the fact that he is proud of who he is and is comfortable with his past. in the smaller text it states 'take advantage of today because tomorrow is not promised.' this also relates to 50 cent as he has been shot over 10 times (you can also see a scar from being shot on his arm) so it connotates that you should live everyday as if its your last because life is short. in this advert the dominant or preferred reading (Hall's theory) would be promoting individuality and to be proud of who you are. However there may also be an oppositional reading (Hall's theory) of criminality that the audience may consider quite inappropriate and this may not be the intention of Reebok.

Film Poster Analysis.

Harrison Ford – Blade runner.

I think that Harrison Ford’s movie blade runner is an action movie. This is because the denotations on the poster is of a man holding a gun in his hand. This connotates that there is danger, violence and of course action present in the movie, this also relates to barthes theory of iconography as the gun is a icon that is used in the film poster to represent danger. Furthermore i believe that the man holding the gun could be the protagonist of the film as he has top lighting shining on him and this lighting comes from above and is used to accentuate the features of the main character. In this case the bright light is shining on him making him look more glamourous and makes him stand out so that the viewer know who to look for when watching the film. Also Another denotation is that there is quite a lot of machinery and some sort of UFO which connotates that the film may also have the genre of sci-fi.

The poster uses mainly dark colours such as black which may connotate that there is something mysterious and dangerous going on. This is because the colour black is associated with power, death, evil, mystery and danger. In the left hand corner of the poster there is a yellow bright light behind the man that could connotate that by the end of the action everything is going to be better as the colour yellow is optimistic and cheerful and relates to joy and happiness. From this I think that the movie may be set somewhere in the future due to all the machinery and the background of the poster and the storyline may be about something that has gone wrong and shown to be a potential threat to earth and mankind.

The title of the film is place at the bottom of the page in bold red and this connotes enigma code (barthes theory) as red connotes danger and seeing the title it will catch the viewers attention as 'blade' represents the icon that is used within the film poster however they would want to know what the story behind the 'runner' is. The way they have used white colour for the protagonists name stands out in big as the viewers may recognize the main protagonist of the movie therefore may attract them to watch it. The text at the bottom represents all the funding the movie has recieved and is writen in very small font in order to represent who is behind the making of this poster/film.

Scary movie 2.

The tagline of the movie poster is 'more merciless. more shameless' this connotes that theres is more shameless scenes in the movie rather then 'scary' as the main title says. i believe the whole reason behind the title of 'scary movie 2' is to get the audiences watching the movie by showing a mix of different genres all put together in one for example horror with comedy. The main title is written in large in red with an image of a black devil which connotes danger. the use of colour that is used within the title stands out and is eye catching as it is placed near to the middle easily visible to the audience. The small image in the centre of the movie title represents the faces as each character of the movie is making different faces and has different body angles that represent them in different ways. The characters are placed in a mid shot placed on the movie poster which is good for the audience as it allows us to analyse each and every character that is within the movie by the clothes they are wearing to the facial expressions they are making which is giving us a instant hint of how they may be during the movie

At the top of the movie poster low key lighting has been used in order to create strong contrasts of light and dark that is giving us the effect of dramatic shadows called chiaroscuro and this represents the whole movie as the movie includes both horror and comedy and the dramatic shadow keeps the audience in suspense. As there is a very strong high key lighting coming from the middle shows that more filter lights have been used. this effect appears more realistic and might depict a dimly lit scene such as the poster itself as with the use of both low and high key lighting it gives the poster a new flashing look and makes us think that there may be more behind it.

Uzak.

The movie 'Uzak' is a turkish word which means distant. The title relates to the pster as it dennotates that there is a man that is standing on his own away from everything. this connotates 'distance' which is actually an actual translation of the work uzak. in the poster, the man standing with his back faced towards us, seems to be the protagonist due to the fact that the main focus is on him. the clothing dennotates a long black coat which connotates mystery. the fact that the man is turned around makes us feel the sense of drama which i feel may be the genre of this movie because of all the dull colours such as grey and black in the background that connotate this. i believe that this poster shows that this movie may be aimed at the target audience of 30 and above as it seems like a very dull movie which older people may like and also understand aswell.

This film poster seems like a mystery/drama type of genre as when looking at the dull colours that have been used in this poster connotes mystery as the use of the blue sky shows the intense look on the protagonists face showing that there may be some mystery behind the hole he is looking through. As there is only one person shown on the film poster we can instantly see that he may be the protagonist of the film. Seeing the boy on the poster and the clothes he is wearing shows that he may be from a small town where they have to work alot as his face is covered in mud and the storyline connotes crime behind the way he is. As from the mid shot that has been taken of him i can see his facial expressions clearly and that he is not happy.

The title on the film poster is written in bold 'im not scared' may connote that the boy has been through alot and he is convincing himself that he is not scared as the whole movie may be about him and how he is living his life. I can also see how the title has fire within the bold letters which connote danger and this goes in with the poster as we can can mystery, sadness and also danger which all add up together to show how the movie has a sad storyline to it. i believe that this movie is aimed at young kids aged 10 and above as its about a little boy and his life and i believe young kids in that age may want to see a protagonist of there own age and learn something or maybe see how they are living.

Sin story has 5 protagonists that seem to have the equal role in the film. however i can see how the man in the middle seems to have a more bigger role then the others as he is placed in the middle. All actors in the movie have a same iconorgraphy which is the gun and this represents danger therefore i believe that the story genre of this film may be an action thriller as gun is usually used in action movies. The background of the poster is located in a dark rainy atmosphere with a high key lighting which shows how this lighting is creating dramatic shadows. in the bottom of the poster i can see how a man is coming out in darkness which connotes enigma code as this gives suspense and makes the audience wonder what role he may be playing in be the movie

the title font used in the poster goes along with the poster as it is in red bold colour and red fits in with the action thriller genre. 'sin' meaning an immoral act considered to be a transgression against divine law shows that the whole movie will contain 5 people doing sins using the gun they are holding and city recpresents the city they are located in gving us an overall picture of sin city. The target audience of this movie i believe would be adults aged 25+ and this is because it seems to be a very old fashioned type of crime movie and people that are older may enjoy and also even understand the concept behind this movie.

from this film poster i can see that the title of the film has the word pirates in that title which denotes that the film is about pirates. The way the poster has been made is is of 3 well known protagonists one which is johnny debt himself which is a big on screen actor known by many people. he is wearing a pirate hat and his hair is done in a pirate style showing that he is the pirate in that movie. I can see that this movie is an action thriller as it involves fights, danger and crime. As you can see there is a picture of a ship that foreshadows that they are all located on the ship and that is were the movie is filmed. the way the title of the film has been presented is very eye catching as there is a picture of a skull in the middle of the title with two hire sticks coming out connoting the danger side of the movie. The mid shot of all the characters is making it easy for us to analyse how there characters may be within the film.

I believe that this movie is aimed at the target audience of people ages 16+ as it is a action movie which is mostly watched by young adults and people in their 30's that enjoy pirate fights. The movie captures a light-hearted comedic feel which pretty much appeals to everyone but it also has its fair share of action sequences which will keep older kids and young adults entertained.

Million dollar baby looks like a very intense movie as it seems like an action movie with some sport aswell as the women in the poster is wearing sporting clothes which may connote that the film may be something to do with sports also the other two men on the side seem very depressed showing that the movie may be very serious. the lighting used in the movie is high key lighting with shadows that are appearing in the backgroung. i believe that this poster may be aimed at older adults ages 25 and over as they may like these sporty movies and may find something to learn from

I think that the movie 'bride and prejudice' is a remake of the movie 'pride and prejudice' but with a bollywood twist because the poster has an indian actress. i believe the genre of this movie may be comedy because the man right at the front of the poster seems to be laughing. the tagline says 'spectacular, romantic, funny and so sexy' which makes me think that the movie has a lot of romance.
