Mest2 - Print brief.

Write a detailed analysis of this Doctor Who magazine front cover using the 12 key conventions from the notes. For each one, explain the purpose of the convention and the effect or impact it has on the audience.

Title of Publication - It is placed in the top third of the magazine to make it visible to the audience however Doctor Who's head covers the bottom of the wording but everyone who would purchase this magazine knows what the magazine is called as it is a very popular show. The font type is different than all of the other types on the page. This makes the title significant, also done through the font colour, which emphasises the genre of science-fiction.

Slogan - The  slogan is located in the middle of the page and says ''The Doctors past comes back to haunt him.The slogan is a short, catchy phrase that is intended to ‘sum-up’ the magazine’s image, what the show is about and to stick in the readers mind.

Central image - The central image is used to incite the audience into the magazine. This magazine is different as they use three people in one central image. The most significant character is placed in the middle of the front cover to place significance on his importance.

Flash/Cover line/Sell line - The flash line is one of the magazines strongest and most important was to attract the audience. Once the audience look at the central image, the think that instantly catches their eyes is the flash line. The cover line is bold and takes up a lot of the space in the front page, which allows the audience to focus on it for example on this magazine cover the flash line is, 'The day of the doctor!'

Free offer - Magazines sometimes come with small gifts or product ‘promotions’ attached. To be effective, these gifts or offers need to be closely targeted at the magazine’s core consumers. The magazine offers a chance to win blu-rays, DVDs, books and CDs. This is is an effective way to engage the reader with the magazine, sometimes this attracts the the audience more then the actual magazine. The prizes that have been put forth increase the chance for the audience to purchase the magazine.

Colour scheme - The colour scheme enhances the mood or particular vibe of the magazine, the colour of the magazine cover page has a a huge impact on how captivated the audience is. In this edition of 'Doctor Who' the colour scheme consists of greys, whites, reds and blacks. These colours create a mysterious sense about the film itself.

Name checks - There are two main name checks used; David Tennant and Matt Smith who are the main characters of  the show so offering a interview with them will grab a buyers attention as they are more likely to buy the magazine if they get to knowmore about their favourite characters.

Language - The language used is snappy and no unnecessery words are used. Lots of poetic techniques are used such as - puns, alitteration. The aim is to grab the audience's attention as fast as possible. The words on the front cover are fairly formal "excuslively" which are mainly to target the older audience. However scientific phrases are also used to target a different audience "space and time".
Competitions -
The oppurtunity of winning prizes are a further way of compelling the reader. Quizzes and and questionaires also draw the reader in to help them feel part of the publication as they're interactively involved meaning they're more likely to be intreseted in the magazine. Competitions make the reader want to buy the magazine as they believe they have a chance in winning something good.

Direct Address & Asking Questions - Direct adressing in this front cover is consisted within the cover line. The word 'celebrating' makes the audience feel as if they are part of the event which is the doctor who edition. This makes the loyal fans feel part of the family they always wanted to belong to.

Barcode, date and price - The barcode situated on the bottom left of the cover indicates validity and the magazine is a free issue therefore there is no price written on it. The date isn't written on it as it is a free issue so there is no need to keep up with when it will be released.

The real target audience - The real target audience for Doctor who would probably be those ages from age 14-25 as it has a sci-fi element to it and the younger generation tend to be interested in this genre.  It is aimed at people in the ABC1 demographic group as it uses complex language in it's magazine. The psychographics group this magazine would attract would be explorers and reformers as both groups are interested in the adventerous side of life and socialisation of humanity.

Find at least 5 magazine covers aimed at a similar target audience to E4 and embed them on your blog. For each one, pick out one cover line that is similar to one you could use in your own magazine cover (e.g. an interview with a celebrity that also appeals to your target audience).

Cover line - "love your looks!"

Title of publication - 'vogue' (although covered by central image is still recognised as its well known)

Cover line - "yes! they're in love"

Title of publication - 'Cosmopolitan' (although covered by central image is still recognised as its well known)

'Get back in shape'

Find at least one TV souvenir magazine cover and embed it on your blog - Doctor Who magazine is always a good option (don't use the example above).

Ill Manors: TEDx lecture

- Not respected by society
- Underground music kept the youth going
- Concious hip hop; like poetry - changed his life
- Wanted to make a change
- Child killing another child - He understands why although it's wrong
- Abused (physically/verbally) kids
- Needs 1 person who can change lives - plant a seed
- Attracted to swearing/violence - talk their language
- Targeted poor schools

Plan B believes that the youth are not to blame for their behaviour, as he grew up in a rough area, he came to understand that the government and parenting of the kids play a big part for the child's behaviour. He believes that in order to change a child's mind you have to speak their language. In terms of this, it is suggested that rapping in a violent manner and explaining experiences will contribute to the child's thoughts and helping them to realise what right from wrong it. If you are to shout and complain and shut down youth communities, it will not benefit the kid, instead you need to talk to them in a manner they prefer.

The target audience of the TEDx lecture would be main streamers as they are able to afford the costs needed to help the youth and as they have well respected jobs, they will be more helpful as they are more experienced and could help those with difficulties. This would the complete opposite audience for the Ill Manors movie as the movie was targeted more for teenagers and more males whereas the TEDx lecture would be more targeted for females of a higher age as they are more caring.

Plan B isn't fond of the media especially after a negative situation he experienced. As people put a lot of trust and are very dependent of the media, for Plan B to talk bad against them challenges society's dominant ideology (linking to Cohen's media theory of moral panic). A moral panic is an extreme feeling expressed about an issue that is seen to threaten the social order.

PPE Learner Response.

Mock grade - B
Learner response - rewrite media institution question.

Rewritten question:
The trailer for the Paralympics 2014 games promoted channel 4's high production brand image values in many ways. Channel 4 has been known for beign too reliant on tv shows so broadcasting the games allows their channel to appeal to a different audience(particularly the demographic groups a and b). The trailer has successfully embedded iconography in the trailer though the use of challenging misconceptions, high production values, shock values, inclusivity/ minority appeal, use of logo, aggressive attitude and huge association with youth culture. They oppose the misconceptions about disabled people and create an entirely new mindset towards them, thus showing viewers that Channel 4 is still capable of shocking audiences and standing out as a channel. Additionally, Channel 4 is supporting the minority by promoting their image and making them look like super-humans. Another way the trailer promotes Channel 4's brand image is by displaying a team working environment. Throughout the trailer, there was the theme of togetherness and supporting one another. This gives a very friendly view and the fact that people with a disability was used shows that they are just as well as supportive. The trailer aids in displaying Channel 4's brand image as a high brow media because it looked realistic and there was a sense of determination giving Channel 4 a serious tone and not mediocre. The use of the logo and clearly printed British flag onto the contestants shirts gives the audience a clear identity to the brand, however this also depicts a sense of patriarch but is not so significant in this context due to the amount of positivity in the trailer.
The fact that the people in the trailer were not going to be passive and display there aggression though close ups and sutured events, portrays strength and passion therefore promoting Channel fours brand image in a immensely positive and appealing light. Finally the association with the youth culture shows that they are not biased and their ideologies are liberal and appealing to a large audience.

Ill manors movie review.

Ill manors is a really interesting movie which gave me a sense of reality and the truth behind some peoples lives. It was horrific seeing the destruction of the characters as well as the way they were treated. This movie made me realise that a child's life is dependant on their owner meaning their parent, and if they are abandoned then it is unlikely they will learn the norms and values of society and grow up to be something they never thought they would. it is an urban thriller/crime/documentary directed by the rapper and songwriter Plan B (Ben Drew). The movie is a gory violent movie based on what Plan B has seen in ghetto areas, its set in south London. The film itself revolves around sex, drugs, violence and weapons. The movie was made to reflect what Ben Drew has seen in his life and how drugs have affected certain people. The movie itself was a dramatic, intriguing and versatile movie. The movie contained unknown actors that helped put forward the reality element of the movie.

Ill Manors is a low budget, British film, directed by rapper and song writer, Plan B (Ben Drew). The movie itself being a low budget movie, contained actors who aren’t celebrities. It contained actors who helped create a realistic element to the movie. It proved effective as we begin to empathise and feel the emotion for some of the characters throughout the movie. Plan B directed the movie in a way that we as the audience began to see realistic elements in the world today. The film depicts the financial struggles of people within a low class and the consequences they face when they turn to illegal means of earning money. The film has several different storylines which are ultimately weaved together, by using Plan B's original raps to narrate different parts of the story. The characters experienced several different issues as children such as abandonment and sexual abuse which is shown to have affected them to be who they are in the film; drug dealers and prostitutes.

Plan B bravely presented the audience with the realities of life to film watchers who would not be particularly familiar with this sort of lifestyle and brings awareness to the consequences of this reality. The film also shows that today's youth are increasingly getting introduced to criminal activity and believe that it is "cool" to be involved with these kinds of things. This is explicitly shown in he film when Jake, a very young boy who looks around the age of 13 or 14 tries to buy weed from a gang. To gain access to the weed and respect from the gang members, Jake was willing to assault his friend who gave him the money. Also, to be acknowledged by the gang leader, Jake even went to the furthest extent by committing and extremely severe crime. This warns the audience of the measures that young people in today's society, are willing to take. The film is very appealing to the aimed target audience as the events in the film are experienced by characters around a similar age to the target audience making the characters easy to identify with.

I believe the movie is a thriller and a crime fiction; A thriller because there’s lots of drama and action in the film. It is also a crime fiction as the whole film is based on crime. However, the genre of this film is crime fiction and drama. The soundtrack of the movie stood out for me the most as it was very different to other movies. The choice of the rapping as a narration to the stories behind each characters life made the movie feel realistic and believable. Also another character from the film is also a rapper, an English rapper. Ben Drew focused his characters to have a similar background which makes it easier for the characters to adapt to their role as it’s their reality. They are both rappers making them more confident and reliable for the movie.

The plot for Ill manors is a multi-character story set over the course of seven days, a scenario where everyone is fighting for respect, he film focuses on eight core characters and their circles of violence, as they struggle to survive on the streets. Each story weaves into one another, painting an ultra-realistic gritty picture of the world which is on the brink of self-destruction. The audience who would enjoy this movie would be aged (18-35), personally the movie requires a mature audience, it has some gory scenes.  Personally the audience would begin to see the reality of Britain and more importantly some of the stereotypes created in the movie. It also informs the audience about today’s society and what drives people to do certain things in today’s society.

Lastly, the movie is a must see gory violent thriller movie. It is an unforgettable movie. It is a well made British low budget film made by Plan B with an intriguing plot; it has many plot twists that keep you at the edge of your seat. It reflects today’s view and intake on the ghetto areas of London.

Progress Report.

On Wednesdays lesson, we started filming.

What we achieved:

WWW: Wednesdays filming helped us achieve alot as those two hours were very helpful for the three of us to get together what we have and come to an solid agreement of a initial plan and idea. On Wednesday we managed to film a bus journey which is part of our story. This was helpful as we got the outside setting scene sorted. We also shot glimpses of our actors. This leaves us to the last setting which will be a house where the rest of the filming will take place.

  • getting a clear idea of what we are going to shoot and how we are going to do that without any
  • how to work well in a team

What are our next steps:

EBI: as we wanted to lighting to be low key at some point of the bus journey we were not able to do it, however we have decided that when it is dark we will capture a bus journey which leaves all the filming to finally be completed ready to start editing.

  • finish off filming
  • make camera work look more professional

Ill Manors trailer anaysis.

  1. What are the typical codes and conventions of film trailers - what information is usually provided?
The ILL manors film trailer consists of many typical codes and conventions such as it has release dates, credit block - institution information and each of the conventions are very important as they would help identify what the trailer is and this gives the audience information about the background story and the purpose of it which is to promote and introducte the film which is mostly by the storyline (narrative) the genre, setting and characters which then leads to the audience having certain expactations and ideas about the film. The storyline and genre are the main two things that give the audience the most expectations and keep them engaged. The genre carrys out ceratin conventions for example murderers gun, weapon, police. This means the audience would want to see these kind of stuff.
  • range of edits and shots
  • dramatic scenes
  • named instituations
  • named directors, characters and big named stars
  • release dates
How are trailers distributed?

Ill Manors trailer distributor was Revolver Entertainment, the fact that this company is the distributor is really effective as they also fundedfor films like Kidulthood and Anuvahood which were box office hits and made a lot of revenue. Trailers are normally made and released on a reel (DVD) to he shown in rental stores for the audience to view them. Or some film trailers are put on apple.com website as long as the distributors pay for it. Ill Manors uses these conventions, they show the distributors company after showing a small clip of the film which straight away pulls the audience in. The trailers then says "From Visionary Artist - Plan B" which is really effective when wanting to attract anwider audience and helps Ben Drew promote his music career as well as the film (synergy) it's a form of cross promotion, also the location of the launch party they had to release the album fitted the concept of the film again cross promotion. Trailers are distributed in different ways depending apon the franchaise of the movie or even the factor of them having a high/low budget film. For example, a big budget Hollywood blockbuster would have a big name in terms of its distributer compared to a low budget British film. A Hollywood film would have more exposure in terms of the plot and the characters in the film which therefore would be exposed through the distributor.

How does Ill Manors use trailer conventions?

Ill Manors uses the typical conventions of film trailers in certain ways. Firstly, the trailer for Ill Manors has a voice over introduces enigma codes in terms of the story-line of Ill Manors. The trailer also provides parts of the film which are effective in the film. however because there are so many storylines in the film all happening at once by providing effective parts it will not give the storyline away, as there are many storylines to follow the viewers will have to watch all the film to get a clearly understanding of the storylines. Also by using the effective parts it makes the viewers want to watch the film as the trailer has persuaded them it is a good film and also encouraged them to watch the film.

Who is the target audience? Does it have a unique selling point or use particular techniques to appeal to the audience? Consider the way the scenes are edited together – does the trailer give away any clues about the narrative? Are the main stars visible in the trailer? Is there information about the director of the film? Is there information about therelease date? Is a narrator’s voice-over used? Why?

As all media products made have an audience in mind. The audience psychographics for Ill Manors would be reformers andstrugglers and demographics from the age group of 18 to 34's both men and woman as the film promotes woman just as bad as men especially as the trailer shows two girls having a fight. The audience class for the film would fall into the group of D/E however, many people from the group of A/B's could be interested as they might find it interesting to view life through different eyes, a different observation.  The target audience for this film would be 18-40. However due to the violence in the film and the inappropriate scenes that are shown the film was giving an 18 rating. However I believe the target audience would start at 13.

How has the genre of the film been represented through characters, settings, lighting, colour, music/dialogue, camera shots/movements/angles and editing?

The genre of the film is teen urban drama as through visually seeing the body language of the protagonists there actions, lifestyle and costumes for example, 'hoodies'. The males in the trailer are wearing joggers and hoodies which represent them stereotypically for young adults being criminals. The music is closely related to the genre as it's mostly listened to by a large amount of teenagers which would allow them to engage more. Habving non-digetic sound is used of plan B, this shows clearly to the audience he is the narrative of Ill Manors. And this is shown clearly through his lyrics "I am the narrator let me take you back and fourth" while this is rapped he is shown driving through the mirror which makes it more so engaging. There are diverse settings during the trailers such as police station, an alley, housing-estate. As for diverse settings there consists of different characters which may suggest that Ill Mnaors follows a complicated storyline which is vital to the audience as they can expect to be confused.

Audience research and planning - focus group.

PRE FOCUS GROUP IDEA
A young girl has just got married to her newly wedded husband. a few weeks later the girl found out that she was pregnant but didn't want to keep it so she got an abortion without telling her husband. A year has gone by and she eventually gets round to telling her husband and he gets angry that she had got rid of their baby without informing him about it so they both start arguing and he leaves to take a break.. The girls mother has bipolar and it is a genetic illness so the girl has got it too. the girl looks out the window and sees a little baby imagining it was the baby that could of been hers but no one is really there. Where ever she goes everyone just stares at her then she goes home and starts drinking and smashing things up and in herself she sees some change but makes herself believe that she is normal.  the girl then starts taking these pills.. the girl then starts getting ready goes partying.. she then disappears. suddenly when she returns she has transformed into a complete different person (her appearance) she is walking in the middle of the roads where everyone is just staring at her, at this point of the scene we start to see a change, her mother then comes and helps her by bringing her home and cleans her up, we can see that the mum has noticed what was wrong with her daughter so then she started giving her the same medication for the bipolar to get better, but the girl wouldn't take the tablets and secretly hide them away somewhere, eventually the pill was full and towards the end she was getting worse and worse. the mother had no choice but to call the doctors to get the girl sectioned for mental health issues and get her taken to the hospital for professional help, as they came to the house the girl tries to run away and falls on the road, by then the doctors have caught her. Suddenly she sees her husband on the road and screams and cries out his name for help but he just stands there frozen on the spot as they drive her away.

 POST FOCUS GROUP IDEA
After hearing the opinions of our focus group, our idea has been adapted to make our production look more realistic. We decided that we wouldn't be able to do as much in 2 minutes for the beginning of our show, so we decided to a shorter storyline to build suspense. This will be that, we are going to build up suspense between the boy and girl, where the girl will be very frigid to text the boy, as she doesn't have the courage to tell him that she's pregnant, because she knows he will do something crazy. The storyline will build up from there where the boy will get paranoid as she's not replying to her texts, and it will end there.

QUOTES FROM RECORDING
''How will you show the beginning of the episode?
''Will it include any other main characters?''
''Have you sorted out your settings?''
''Have you decided on how the acting is going to be shot''
''How will you make it look effective''

TARGET AUDIENCE
broadcast - on channel 4 (E4) 8:00pm. this would be because it is not suitable for little children (young audience) so they should be put to bed early and shown as a reality TV show so this would be a good time for adults and teenagers from 15+ to watch after coming from school/collage or work.
