Ill Manors trailer anaysis.

  1. What are the typical codes and conventions of film trailers - what information is usually provided?
The ILL manors film trailer consists of many typical codes and conventions such as it has release dates, credit block - institution information and each of the conventions are very important as they would help identify what the trailer is and this gives the audience information about the background story and the purpose of it which is to promote and introducte the film which is mostly by the storyline (narrative) the genre, setting and characters which then leads to the audience having certain expactations and ideas about the film. The storyline and genre are the main two things that give the audience the most expectations and keep them engaged. The genre carrys out ceratin conventions for example murderers gun, weapon, police. This means the audience would want to see these kind of stuff.
  • range of edits and shots
  • dramatic scenes
  • named instituations
  • named directors, characters and big named stars
  • release dates
How are trailers distributed?

Ill Manors trailer distributor was Revolver Entertainment, the fact that this company is the distributor is really effective as they also fundedfor films like Kidulthood and Anuvahood which were box office hits and made a lot of revenue. Trailers are normally made and released on a reel (DVD) to he shown in rental stores for the audience to view them. Or some film trailers are put on apple.com website as long as the distributors pay for it. Ill Manors uses these conventions, they show the distributors company after showing a small clip of the film which straight away pulls the audience in. The trailers then says "From Visionary Artist - Plan B" which is really effective when wanting to attract anwider audience and helps Ben Drew promote his music career as well as the film (synergy) it's a form of cross promotion, also the location of the launch party they had to release the album fitted the concept of the film again cross promotion. Trailers are distributed in different ways depending apon the franchaise of the movie or even the factor of them having a high/low budget film. For example, a big budget Hollywood blockbuster would have a big name in terms of its distributer compared to a low budget British film. A Hollywood film would have more exposure in terms of the plot and the characters in the film which therefore would be exposed through the distributor.

How does Ill Manors use trailer conventions?

Ill Manors uses the typical conventions of film trailers in certain ways. Firstly, the trailer for Ill Manors has a voice over introduces enigma codes in terms of the story-line of Ill Manors. The trailer also provides parts of the film which are effective in the film. however because there are so many storylines in the film all happening at once by providing effective parts it will not give the storyline away, as there are many storylines to follow the viewers will have to watch all the film to get a clearly understanding of the storylines. Also by using the effective parts it makes the viewers want to watch the film as the trailer has persuaded them it is a good film and also encouraged them to watch the film.

Who is the target audience? Does it have a unique selling point or use particular techniques to appeal to the audience? Consider the way the scenes are edited together – does the trailer give away any clues about the narrative? Are the main stars visible in the trailer? Is there information about the director of the film? Is there information about therelease date? Is a narrator’s voice-over used? Why?

As all media products made have an audience in mind. The audience psychographics for Ill Manors would be reformers andstrugglers and demographics from the age group of 18 to 34's both men and woman as the film promotes woman just as bad as men especially as the trailer shows two girls having a fight. The audience class for the film would fall into the group of D/E however, many people from the group of A/B's could be interested as they might find it interesting to view life through different eyes, a different observation.  The target audience for this film would be 18-40. However due to the violence in the film and the inappropriate scenes that are shown the film was giving an 18 rating. However I believe the target audience would start at 13.

How has the genre of the film been represented through characters, settings, lighting, colour, music/dialogue, camera shots/movements/angles and editing?

The genre of the film is teen urban drama as through visually seeing the body language of the protagonists there actions, lifestyle and costumes for example, 'hoodies'. The males in the trailer are wearing joggers and hoodies which represent them stereotypically for young adults being criminals. The music is closely related to the genre as it's mostly listened to by a large amount of teenagers which would allow them to engage more. Habving non-digetic sound is used of plan B, this shows clearly to the audience he is the narrative of Ill Manors. And this is shown clearly through his lyrics "I am the narrator let me take you back and fourth" while this is rapped he is shown driving through the mirror which makes it more so engaging. There are diverse settings during the trailers such as police station, an alley, housing-estate. As for diverse settings there consists of different characters which may suggest that Ill Mnaors follows a complicated storyline which is vital to the audience as they can expect to be confused.
